My philosophy

To guide my tutoring sessions I first work to establish a trusting and positive relationship. I am generous with praise and enjoy seeking out interesting materials to support and motivate. I help students identify and understand the kind of learner they are, visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. Uncovering this knowledge is a fun way to help students better understand themselves and build on their strengths. I also ask students to identify things they are good at or things that they very much enjoy doing.

Formal assessments are also done early on and may include reading, spelling, and writing. I follow the Virginia Standards of Learning for your student’s current grade level. I work with students and families to best support homework and school projects. Finally, the important questions I ask myself are "What is getting in the way of success for this student?” “What skill building needs to take place so they can be more successful?” and most importantly, “What will motivate this student?”
